A Cameroonian migrant rescued in the Mediterranean gave birth to a baby boy aboard an Italian rescue vessel and named him after its captain, Italy's navy said Tuesday.
The woman and her husband named their baby Francois Manuel after the captain of the 'Bettica', Francesco Iavazzo, and the infant was born on Monday at 19.45, the navy said.
Mother and child were "in the best of health" and the baby was delivered by an obstetrician and a paediatric doctor, the navy stated.
The family were among 756 migrants who reached the southern Italian port of Vito Valentia on Tuesday aboard the Bettica.
