Police in Sicily on Friday impounded assets worth some 1.5 million euros from a businessman with alleged links to a powerful mafia clan.
The assets seized from Giuseppe Lo Re included five unspecified items of real estate, a vehicle dealership, trucks and automobiles, and a night club.
Lo Re was put under special police surveillance for the next four years and banned from leaving the town of Caronia near Messina, where he lives, police said.
Lo Re has close ties to the Mistretta crime family, whose late head Sebastiano Rampulla was the top mafia boss in the province of Messina.
Rampulla's brother Pietro is serving a life-sentence for making the bomb that killed anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falconi, his wife and three policemen as they drove along a highway near Palermo on 23 May 1992.
