Mattarella urges solidarity, aid for migrants

Italy should show solidarity with many thousands of migrants landing on its shores and help improve conditions in their homelands, the country's president Sergio Mattarella said on Friday.

"No one can wish for an ever-greater influx of migrants but there is a danger this will happen if we think we can simply bar them," Mattarella state.

He was addressing the influential Catholic lay organisation Communion and Liberation's annual meeting in Italy's eastern coastal resort of Rimini.

Italy and other European nations can only manage the migration crisis and guarantee security through cooperation and unity, Mattarella said.

"Rapidly and with serious intent, we need to create job opportunities and well-being in those countries where people have nothing," he stated.

"The reason for this is that the welfare of migrants wholly coincides with our own," Mattarella said, adding that people traffickers must be treated with "utmost severity".

The European Union executive in June unveiled proposals offering eight billion euros over five years aimed at giving Africans more incentives to stay at home rather than risking all to reach Europe.

Much of the aid will come from EU states, but some will be from private donors, under the proposals aimed at stemming the current annual influx of hundreds of thousands of migrants across the Mediterranean from Africa.
