Turkish armed forces bombed four Islamic State targets in northern Syria on Tuesday, broadcaster NTV reported.

Turkish war planes dropped around 40 missiles on the unspecified targets, NTV said.

The raids were conducted after rockets fired from Syrian territory struck the Turkish border town of Karkamis without harming anyone, according to NTV.

Karkarmis lies close to the Syrian city of Jarabulus, where Syrian rebels backed by Turkey are poised to launch an offensive to wrest the city from IS control.

Turkish forces on Monday shelled IS targets in Jarabulus and positions belonging to Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) militia near the former IS stronghold of Manbij in northern Syria, which was captured on Friday by US-backed fighters.

Turkey earlier in August announced its war planes would "actively participate" in bombing raids against IS in Syria.

Foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey had come under attack from IS because the country had cut its supply lines and blocked the flow of foreign fighters to jihadist-held territory.
