Four people are under investigation over the suicide of a young woman who featured in a pornographic video shared on the popular messaging service WhatsApp and posted to social media, police said on Thursday.
The 31-year-old woman, named as Tiziana C. had filed a civil lawsuit against the four individuals after receiving abuse from internet trolls over the video allegedly sent to the suspects on WhatsApp last year.
The woman allegedly hanged herself with a scarf at the home of relations in Mugnano near Naples on Tuesday after an earlier suicide attempt. She had also applied to change her name.
Naples prosecutors are probing the woman's suicide and a court in the southern city has ruled that any web pages referring to the porn video she appeared in must be removed from the Internet immediately.
"We need to see faster action [against Web shaming] by the various Internet platforms but also investment in teaching greater respect for individuals online," Antonello Soro, head of Italy's privacy watchdog said on Wednesday.
