Man hanged in Iranian football stadium

Authorities have hanged a convicted rapist and murderer at a public execution in the south of the country, the Iran Human Rights watchdog reports, quoting the state-run Mehrs news agency.

The man, referred to as 'Saeed T' was hanged in the city of Neyriz is Fars province on Thursday, Mehrs cited the judiciary in Fars as saying.

Photos of the public hanging published by Iran Human Rights showed that at least one child was present and watching the execution.

"We call on the international community and on international sports organisations, including FIFA, to condemn the latest barbaric act," said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, spokesperson for Iran Human Rights.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran and territories controlled by ISIS are the only places where we are aware of sports arenas being used for public executions," he said, using an acronym for the Islamic State jihadist group that has overrun swathes of Syria and Iraq.

Iran is once again the regional leader in executions this year - over 230 - and put to death nearly 1,000 people in 2015, more than any other country except China, according to campaign group Amnesty International.

Murder, drug-trafficking, 'enmity against God', rape and sodomy are among crimes punishable with death in the theocratic state.

Iranian authorities August executed 20 minority Sunni prisoners at the Rajai Shahr Prison west of Tehran on 2 August, the country's attorney general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri told state-run broacaster IRIB.

The prisoners were executed after an Iranian court convicted them of crimes including homicide and endangering national security, Montazeri was cited as telling IRIB.

IRIB broadcast what it claimed was the confessions of some of the prisoners before they were hanged.
