At least 200 aftershocks have rocked central Italy on Thursday after two big earthquakes struck the region, damaging buildings, leaving many hundreds homeless and causing the death of at least one person.
The strongest aftershock of magnitude 4.4 struck at 3.50 am in the Marche region's province of Macerata, where two quakes with magnitude 5.4 and 5.9 struck at 19.10 and 21.18 on Wednesday, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics (INGV) said.
The epicentres of Wednesday's earthquakes were between the provinces of Macerata and Ascoli Piceno and Perugia in the Umbria region and were located north of the epicentre of the deadly magnitude 6.2 quake that devastated several hillside towns in the region on 24 August, the INGV said.
