Police were on Wednesday studying security camera footage after a newborn baby girl was found abandoned on a street in the town of Villa Literno in the southern Campania region.
The 50-year-old owner of a grocer's store in the town found the newborn at 6am, wrapped in a blanket, her umbilical chord tied with a shoe-lace and called emergency services.
The baby, believe to be of Romanian heritage, was taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Castel Volturno, north of Naples.
Despite the bitter cold of the early morning, the infant was said to be healthy and was being cared for by hospital staff.
