Dozens die in Kyrgyzstan as Turkish cargo jet hits houses

Dozens of people were reported to have been killed on Monday when a Turkish cargo plane crashed into homes near the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek while landing in fog.

At least 37 people died, most of them on the ground, according to officials, while one of the aircraft's pilots and four crew members were confirmed dead, local emergency services were quoted as telling Kyrgyz news agency AKIPress.

A number of children are among the dead, officials said.

The plane crashed in the village of Dacha-Suu in Chuy province, around 25 kilometres north of Bishkek, as it landed at Manas airport.

The Boeing 747 jet belonged to ACT Airlines and was operated as a Turkish airlines flight, local news agency AKIPress reported.

ACT is an Istanbul-based airline operating under the name MyCargo. The plane is believed to have been around 14 years old.

It was carrying 85 tonnes of consumer goods, including equipment and home appliances, AKIPress said, citing Kyrgyzstan's transport minister Jamshitbek Kalilov.

Kazakhstan's president Nursultan Nazarbayev, sent a message of condolance to Monday's crash victims, the country's Akorda news agency reported.
