US missile attack 'irresponsible' says Assad's office

The office of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad on Friday slammed the United States missile attack on Shayrat air base, calling it "irresponsible," in a statement cited by state-run news agency Sana.

"The attack was thoughtless and irresponsible and was borne of a limited political vision that is blind to reality," said the statement.

The statement called the cruise missile attack on Shayrat in northern Syria, which the Syrian army said killed six personnel, "shameful".

The attack on a sovereign state's air base showed that the policy of successive US administrations was to "subjugate peoples" and "try to dominate the world", the statement continued.

"If the US regime thinks this attack supports its agents among the terrorist groups and organisations present on Syrian territory, this merely increases Syria's resolve to crush terrorism throughout its territory - let this be clear," the statement concluded.

US president Donald Trump ordered the dawn strikes on Shayrat in response to a suspected chemical attack launched Tuesday on the rebel-held northern Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun in which at least 70 people died including 20 children.

The Khan Sheikhoun attack drew international outrage and Western allies of the US as well as Israel voiced support for Trump's decision to launch air strikes, as did Turkey, which called for a no-fly zone and safe zones in Syria to be put in place without delay.

Syria and its ally Russia deny Damascus had carried out a chemical attack.
