Police arrested a Moroccan in the Sardinian port city of Cagliari on Monday who arrived there aboard a Spanish navy ship with 650 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean.
The 40-year-old Moroccan, named as Abdelkarim Taki, faces charges of abetting illegal immigration.
He allegedly piloted an inflatable rubber dinghy whose passengers were rescued off Libya at the weekend and was identified from statements migrants gave to police.
Taki is being held in Cagliari's jail pending charges.
