A total of 11 people from Syria's eastern Deir Ezzor province died in air strikes believe to have been carried out by the US-led coalition against the Islamic State jihadist group, a monitor said on Thursday.

The victims were from two families and are believed to have been killed by coalition warplanes that took off from neighbouring Iraq, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Those killed in the air raids included a man and his wife and three of their sons and their daughter, an elderly woman, another woman and her child and her mother, the Observatory said.

Several other people were critically injured and others were missing under the rubble of buildings destroyed in the bombings, meaning the death toll was expected to rise, according to the watchdog.

The monitoring group relies for its information on a network of activists and doctors inside Syria.

A US-led coalition air strike killed at least 16 civilians including women and children the northern Syrian village of al-Baruda, the anti-IS group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently reported on Wednesday.
