A magnitude 3.7 earthquake rattled several areas of central and northern Italy early on Tuesday, the national geophysics and vulcanology institute (Ingv) reported.

The quake struck at 3.37 in the provinces of Bologna in the northern Emilia-Romagna region and the province of Florence in the central Tuscany region, the Ingv said.

The localities closet to the quake epicentre were the towns of Castel del Rio, Palazzuolo sul Senio, and Casola Valsenio, the Ingv stated.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to buildings.

The tremor came after a magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Italy's central Aquila province on 9 June, the latest in a series since last year.

Five strong earthquakes have hit rural central Italy's mountainous spine since August. The quakes have killed 300 people, left several thousand homeless and caused more than 23 billion euros of damage to dwellings and other buildings including medieval churches as well as to agriculture.
