Italy decries North Korea's latest missile test

Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano on Friday condemned North Korea after it fired a ballistic missile over Japan - the second missile test in less than a month and the first since the rogue regime tested its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb yet on 3 September.

"Italy categorically condemns the overnight launch (of the missile) by North Korea. It calls for a robust response in Europe and internationally," Alfano tweeted.

The missile fired over Japan had the range to hit the US territory of Guam. It reached an altitude of about 770 kilometres, travelling 3,700km past Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido before landing in the sea, South Korea's military said.

South Korea, a key US ally, responded within minutes by firing two ballistic missiles into the sea in a simulated strike on the North.

At the request of the US and Japan, the UN Security Council was due to meet later on Friday in New York to discuss the latest provocation by Pygongyang, which insists it needs a nuclear-weapons programme to ensure its survival.

After North Korea said it tested a hydrogen bomb on 3 September that could be miniaturised and loaded on a long-range missile, Alfano urged Pyongyang to "immediately" halt its atomic programme.

North Korea's nuclear tests were "a factor for destabilising peace, regional and international security and nuclear non-proliferation," Alfano said.

Italy is current president of the G7 group of industrialised nations and holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council's sanctions committee for North Korea.
