Italy certain al-Sisi wants to solve Regeni murder

Italy said on Thursday it was "convinced" that Egypt's president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi wanted to bring researcher Giulio Regeni's killers to justice almost 22 months after his abduction torture and murder in Cairo.

"We are convinced that President al-Sisi is passionate about uncovering the truth," Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano told journalists in Rome.

"And we are confident his words will make the Egyptian security apparatus try harder in this quest," Alfano said, referring to remarks a day earlier by Sisi apparently aimed at reassuring Italy over the case.

Italy is trying to solve Regeni's murder "though judicial cooperation between our country and Egypt but also through collaboration with the University of Cambridge and diplomatic channels," Alfano said.

"I recently discussed the case with my British counterpart Boris Johnson," Alfano said.

His comments came after Sisi on Wednesday told reporters in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh that the Egyptian government wanted to apprehend Regeni's killers.

"We want to find the culprits and are cooperating on this case in a very transparent way with Italian authorities and prosecutors," Sisi said.

"We hope to have answers as soon as possible," he added.

Italy withdrew its ambassador to Egypt for 15 months in protest at a lack of progress in solving the brutal killing of Regeni, a 28-year-old PhD student at Cambridge university.

Regeni's badly tortured and mutilated body was found on Cairo's outskirts in early February last year, ten days after he vanished in the city.

There is widespread suspicion among western diplomats and in the Italian press that Egypt's security forces were behind Regeni brutal murder.
