A stable Libya is key to the Mediterranean region's stability and security, Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano tweeted on Thursday.
"The stability and security of the Mediterranean depends on Libya. The fight against terrorism and human trafficking must remain a strategic priority," read Alfano's tweet.
Alfano was on Thursday slated to chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York that UN special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, was due to address.
Alfano was due to hold meetings with Salame, Libya's foreign minister Mohammed Taher Siyala and several top UN officials during his two-day visit.
Italy is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and this month holds its rotating presidency.
