Lebanon's president Michel Aoun in Beirut on Tuesday met Joseph Aoun, head of the country's armed forces, amid heightened tensions at the border with Israel, according to Lebanese media reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, General Aoun urged Lebanese soldiers at the southern border with Israel to stand fully ready to face the “threats of the Israeli enemy”.

“I call upon you for full readiness at the southern border to face the threats of the Israeli enemy and its violations, and what it is indicating in aggressive intentions towards Lebanon, its people and its army,” the army’s Twitter account quoted Aoun as saying.

Tensions rose earlier this year between the Iran-backed Lebanese Shia military and political movement Hezbollah and Israel, which is alarmed by Iran and Hezbollah's growing in influence in Syria and the Middle East region.
