Italy sees prospects for democratic elections in conflict-wracked Libya, foreign minister Angelin Alfano said on Wednesday.

"I have the clear sensation that we have reached unanimity," Alfano said after attending a two-day meeting in Brussels of NATO foreign ministers.

"This is a positive thing given that too many negotiations have yielded few results," Alfano stated.

Alfano said that he and his colleagues agreed that key topics are "migration, terrorism threats and instability".

"For the first time we have a negotiator who has held sway in Misurata and not only in Tripoli, with the prospect of holding democratic elections in Libya," Alfano said.

In November, the United Nations special envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, visited the nortwestern city of Misurata, as well as Tripoli and the eastern city Tobruk, and talked to local councillors, community leaders and students as well as members of Misurata's chamber of commerce.
