A Libyan coastguard vessel rescued 116 African migrants including five women aboard an inflatable dinghy north of the coastal city of Zouara, the Libyan coastguard said on Wednesday.

The dinghy's passengers were rescued on Sunday, taken to Tripoli and given humanitarian and medical aid before being transferred to the Taguira camp, east of the Libyan capital, the coastguard said on Facebook.

The migrants are from Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Ivory Coast and Nigeria, the Facebook post said.

The Libyan coastguard rescued some 10,000 migrants in the first six months of the year, according to the United Nations migration agency.

UN human rights chief Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein has criticised the European Union’s support for the Libyan coastguard, which its anti-trafficking mission Sophia has helped train and Italy has helped equip.

The EU policy has led to the arbitrary and indefinite imprisonment in Libya of tens of thousands of migrants in “inhuman” conditions, according to al-Hussein.

Libya's coastguard have also been filmed beating migrants and last week a Spanish NGO accused it of deliberately sinking a migrant boat and causing the deaths of a woman and a small boy who perished at sea after refusing to board a patrol boat. The coastguard deny the claims.
