Italy's interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini on Monday chaired an hour-long cabinet meeting. Prime minister Giuseppe Conte and welfare and industry minister and deputy Luigi Di Maio did not attend the meeting.

"I rule out military interventions which do not resolve anything," Salvini told reporters as he left the prime minister's office in Rome. He was referring to the escalating clashes between rival militias in the Libyan capital, Tripoli over the past week.

"Italy should play a leading role in bringing peace to Libya. Invasions by those with ulterior motives should not prevail over peace, which is for the common good."

It was not clear ministers discussed the emergency in Libya at the cabinet meeting, whose formal agenda included a series of regional laws.
