The United Nations mission in Libya on Friday deplored the deteriorating security situation in Libya’s south and urged Libyan authorities to take swift and effective action against the lawlessness engulfing the region.
"UNSMIL condemns the violations perpetrated by foreign armed groups on Libyan territory and encourages regional actors to support the national authorities in addressing the situation in a manner respectful of Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity," the mission stated.
The UN is also "deeply concerned" about an uptick in criminal acts, especially the recent spate of kidnappings and vandalism of the infrastructure of the Great Man-Made River irrigation project, UNSMIL said.
The worsening law and order in southern Libya is causing "severe deprivation" to residents, who were already sufferering from inadequate services, UNSMIL noted.
"The UN will continue working with the local authorities to provide humanitarian assistance where needed and urges the (UN-backed) Government of National Accord to step up service-delivery to the region," the UNSMIL statement said.
