Italy's populist government is complying with European human rights norms on migration, as well as with "constitutional principles", premier Giuseppe Conte said on Monday.

"We adhere to European standards," Conte told a media conference at the Foreign Press Association in Rome.

"The government's policies are in line with European standards and with the charter of basic rights, with various treaties and with constitutional principles," he said.

The Italian cabinet earlier this month issued a security decree that drastically toughens the rules for refugees and asylum-seekers, drawing widespread criticism on human rights grounds.

The brainchild of anti-migrant interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini, the decree must be voted into law by the Italian parliament with 60 days of being issued.

Italy's president Sergio Mattarella approved the decree after "fine-tuning", Salvini announced on 5 October. However, in an accompanying letter to Conte, Mattarella underlined that "Constitutional and international State obligations" remained.
