"Beko, the second largest white goods brand in Europe, owes much of its success to Arçelik's world-class innovation teams and the company's significant investment in R&D," said Hakan Bulgurlu, CEO of Arçelik A.S.

"R&D is crucial to the future of Arçelik - it is at the heart of our global strategy. Our innovation capabilities enable us to enter into new markets with products that meet the needs and expectations of consumers.

"In addition to the centre at Cambridge, we have eight R&D facilities in Turkey and one in Taiwan. Our global R&D team of more than 1000 employees has filed more than 2000 patent applications, and we are the patent-leader of Turkey."

Ahead of the centre's summer opening, Arçelik is currently recruiting for its first UK R&D employees. The team will work on projects that could, with the support of Arçelik 's knowledge, experience and funding, lead to viable products or services.

Arçelik 's new centre at Cambridge builds on the company's existing relationship with the university - one of its growing list of R&D collaborations.

Richard Moore, Her Majesty's Ambassador to Turkey, said: "I would like to congratulate Arçelik on the opening of their research and development Centre in Cambridge. My staff in Turkey and UKTI London have worked closely with Arçelik to realise this project and I believe this endeavour will play a pivotal role in strengthening both Arçelik's global R&D operations and, more widely, trade and investment relations between Turkey and the United Kingdom."

Lord Janvrin, the Prime Minister's Trade Envoy for Turkey, said: "After my visit to Arçelik research and development Centre in Istanbul last year, I am delighted to welcome the opening of their research and development Centre in Cambridge. This centre will allow Arçelik to expand its R&D activities in the UK, help it develop new and innovative home appliances and strengthen their position as one of the major home appliance companies in the global market. I am particularly pleased that Arçelik is growing its research and development here in collaboration with a number of leading UK universities."
