MONTREAL, October 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

Rackam, Cascades and the Government of Quebec officially inaugurate Canada's largest industrial solar thermal installation at Cascade's industrial complex.

Following Rackam's earlier projects in Spain and Portugal, the concentrated solar power (CSP) plant uses parabolic mirrors to concentrate the sun's irradiation, providing in excess of 1 MWh of heat which Cascades uses to reduce both its overall energy costs and its greenhouse gas emissions. The project is a first in the pulp and paper industry.

Rackam's S20 technology, which has been installed for the first time at the site, is part of a new generation of ground-based collectors. These are entirely designed and manufactured in Canada, and contain an innovative structure that allows for greater cost reduction when compared to their S10 counterpart, which were designed for rooftop installations.

"The solar field in Kingsey Falls is the only one of its kind in Canada, a proof of Cascades' leadership and capacity for innovation," says Mathieu Chagnon, president of Rackam. "We have overcome a great number of obstacles and challenges since we first started on this project. The result is extremely satisfying: with more than 1 490 m2 of aperture, the solar field is able to provide high-quality energy for the industrial complex in Kingsey Falls."

The installation operates in a fully automated way. It includes a program for tracking the sun throughout the day, as well as a meteorological station that allows the system to protect the mirrors in the event of unfavorable weather. It will produce more than 4 400 GJ per year for heating more than 87 500 m3 of water, while saving more than 139 700 m3 of natural gas for an overall reduction of 265 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.

Founded in 2009, Rackam is a Canadian designer, manufacturer and installer of industrial-scale solar thermal technologies. The company has so far completed several projects in North America and Europe, with pending projects in South America and Africa.
