Eni's Ceo Claudio Descalzi has said that "Europe must aim to the South, namely the Mediterranean area and Africa, in order to strengthen it". In an interview with the financial newspaper 'Il Sole 24 Ore', the number one of the Italian petroleum's giant expressed his firm belief that "there is a need to define common strategies to ensure a real security regarding the supplies".

For Descalzi "Africa must be a fellow, a partner for the energy development of the continent as well as for supporting security and diversification in Europe". Descalzi added that "we need to follow these paths with convinction, we need to be united because we are dealing with the common interest and the future of generations to come".

Opec's Summit will be held in Algier at the end of the month and the market is expecting for a cut in production as a boost for recovery of oil prices. Descalzi has outlined a clear strategy for the Old Continent and has stressed his confidence in the next Opec Summit. "There can be no national strategies in Europe, because none of the European countries is self-sufficient", Eni's Ceo said.

Descalzi explained that energy security is based on "diversification and a right choice of the energy mix, which means for us gas and renewables, since Europe accepted and adopted Kyoto's approach and we were the first ones to take into account the final conclusions of the international conference on climate in Paris by translating them into targets".

Descalzi underlined that "any strategy must promote diversification and be oriented to the right energy mix. To fail this aim will make us weaker and will weaken at the same time those who, like Africa, have energy but are not able to develop it. As for those who do not have nor energy neither facilities, they simply can't afford to withdraw, it would be like to close an empty store".

Eni's Ceo concluded that "there is a wide belief that we are rich, but Europe is poor from the point of view of energy and we have to face this problem in depth with a common vision and wiping out local interests and selfishness".
