Eni, GE Renewable Energy to power major wind project in Kazakhstan

GE Renewable Energy will supply 13 turbines for Eni's 48MW Badamsha project in Kazakhstan - the country's first wind farm that will boost its wind capacity by 25 percent, Eni said in statement on Thursday.

The deal was signed by the Global Wind Summit the German city of Hamburg, attended by Luca Cosentino, executive vice president of Eni's Energy Solutions department and Jerome Pecresse, president and CEO of GE renewable energy.

The Badamsha plant, located in the Kazakhstan's northwest, represents Eni’s first large-scale investment in wind power and GE’s first wind onshore plant in Kazakhstan, and it is expected to fully commissioned by the end of next year.

“With this project Eni is pleased to fully support the country’s ambitious goal to procure 50 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2050, " said Cosentino.

"We expect to have it in operation by the end of 2019,” he said.

Eni plans to invest 1.2 billion euros through 2022 on its renewable energy portfolio, which includes worldwide solar, wind and hybrid projects, Cosentino stated.

“Badamsha marks our first wind project with Eni and our first in Kazakhstan. We are extremely proud to be working alongside Eni during an exciting time for them and for the entire energy segment," said Pecresse.

Eni took the final investment decision to build the plant in June, having already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GE and the Kazakh energy ministry in 2017 to promote the development of renewables in Kazakhstan.

Eni is joint operator of the Kazakhstan's Karachaganak field and is an equity partner in various projects in the Northern Caspian Sea, including the giant Kashagan field. In 2018 Eni became joint operator in the exploration block Isatay, with the national company KMG. It has been present in Kazakhstan since 1992.

GE Renewable Energy, part of US conglomerate General Electric, has installed 35,000 wind turbines around the word with over 400 gigawatts capacity globally - "the largest clean energy footprint" - according to its website.
