Italy's state-controlled major Eni said Thursday it has made a new gas discovery in its Nour exploration prospect off Egypt and is evaluating the new find located in the Nour North Sinai Concession, in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Once it has completed the evaluation of the find, Eni will carry out feasibility studies "to accelerate the exploitation of these new resources leveraging the synergies with existing facilities and infrastructures," the company said in a statement.

The exploratory Nour-1 well drilled by the Scarabeo-9 semi-sub in a water depth of 295 meters and reached a total depth of 5,914 metres.

It has an estimated gas column of 90 metres and has not been tested but "intense and accurate data acquisition has been carried out," Eni said.

Eni operates the Nour North Sinai Concession, with a 40% stake, BP holds a 25% stake, Mubadala Petroleum a 20% stake and Tharwa Petroleum Company a 15% stake. The concession is in participation with Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company, Eni stated.

Eni is the country's leading producer with equity above 340,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, a figure set to grow with the ramp up this year of the giant Zohr project - the largest gas field in the Mediterranean.

The company has been operating in Egypt through its Ieoc subsidiary since 1954.
