Firms from the northern Lombardy region are highly competitive in key export sectors such as mechanical engineering, vehicles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and electronics, foreign undersecretary Ivan Scalfarotto said on Monday.
"Lombardy experted goods worth over 127 billion euros in 2018, which made up 27.3% of Italy's total exports," Scalfarotto said according to a foreign ministry statement.
Scalfarotto was addresssing the Top200 conference organised in the city of Lodi by Lombardy's Assolombarda regional business lobby, the statement said.
For every 3 euros worth of exports, just under one euro's worth was produced in Lombardy, Scalfarotto underlined in the statement, calling the region's firms "a virtuous model".
"The government must forge a credible strategy containing precise goals and tools to strengthen exports and internationalisation," Scalfarotto said.
