Di Maio voices 'strong' support for Dubai Expo

Italy is putting "all the necessary resources" into Dubai Expo 2020 and fully backs the trade fair that can help speed its recovery from the economic ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said Monday during a visit to the UAE.

"The Minister expressed Italy's strong support for a successful exhibition, underlining how our country is investing all the resources necessary to create a highly attractive pavilion inspired by the of principle of sustainability and the circular economy," said a foreign ministry statement.

Dubai Expo 2020, now scheduled to be held from October 2021 through March 2022 will also serve as "the perfect showcase" for Italian design and technology," the statement added.

"Dubai Expo will offer an important platform to relaunch and strengthen economic-trade relations with all participating countries," said the statement.

Exports are a fundamental pillar for the economic recovery of our country," the statement underlined.

During his visit, Di Maio was due to told talks with UAE foreign minister Abdallah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, minister of tolerance and coexistence and UAE commissioner general for Dubai Expo, Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, and economy minister Abdallah bin Touq Al Marri.

Di Maio was also set to meet representatives of the Italian business and scientific communities in the UAE and to visit the Expo Dubai site, according to the statement.

Over 22.2 million people visited Expo 2015 held in the northern Italian city of Milan. Participants from 145 countries, three international organizations, businesses, civil society organizations and NGOs attended the fair.
