Armenia hosts ancient Roman mosaics exhibit

Italy's ambassador to Armenia, Vincenzo Del Monaco, on Friday attended the inauguration in Yerevan of an ancient Roman mosaics exhibition that will be on show in Armenia's National Gallery until 29 September, the foreign ministry said in statement.

The exhibition entitled 'Colourful visions of Ancient Rome: Mosaics from the Capitoline Museums', displays 21 prestigious mosaic works from Rome's Capitoline Museums, which date from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD and were all unearthed in Rome, said the statement.

The mosaics "confirm the technical evolution of craft shops, extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship of workers and, at the same time, the change of trends and tastes of the clients from the Republican era to the late Roman imperial period," the statement said.

The exhibition is the highlight of a rich programme of Italian cultural events in the Armenian capital this summer, the statement underlined.

Armenia's education, science and culture minister Araik Harutyunyan, the diplomatic corps, as well as representatives from academia and civil society organisations were slated to attend the exhibition's inauguration, the statement noted.

The event is being promoted by the Italian embassy in Armenia with the organisational support of Global Project Consulting, and is part of a series of activities aimed at highlighting Italy's cultural heritage which are being spearheaded by the foreign ministry and Rome city council.

The exhibition, which is being sponsored by the Armenian government, was previously on show in Sofia, Bulgaria and will also travel to Tbilisi, Georgia, the statement concluded.
