The foreign ministry on Thursday praised the recognition Italy received from the United Nations cultural organisation for three traditional practices - seasonal livestock droving along Mediterranean migratory routes, Alpinism and The Celestinian Forgiveness annual celebration in the central city of L'Aquila.

The foreign ministry said it "welcomes with satisfaction" the inscriptions by UNESCO of the three Italian practices in its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

"This positive result was achieved thanks to concerted efforts by the foreign ministry, Italy's national UNESCO committee, the foreign, agriculture and environment ministries, local bodies, communities and sponsoring committees," the foreign ministry statement said.

"Italy also opted to work together with other countries on transnational candidacies in order to add value to certain aspects of our shared cultures," the statement added.

Italy, Greece and Austria nominated Mediterranean seasonal livestock droving or transumance for UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Italy, France and Switzerland nominated Alpinism for inclusion in the list.

Alpinism, transumance and the Celestinian Forgiveness ritual were among five cultural practices added to the Representative List of Intangible Heritage at a meeting of UNESCO's intergovernmental committee in Colombia's capital Bogota being held through Sunday.

UNESCO's Representative List seeks to enhance visibility for the traditional practices and know-how of communities, according to a statement from the UN agency.
