The grassroots Five-Star movement on Friday suspended the northern city of Parma's mayor Federico Pizzarotti, saying Pizzarotti had known for months he was being probed over two appointments at Parma's opera-house.

"On yesterday did we receive news in the media of the investigation, but the mayor [Pizzarotti] has known about it for months," the Five-Star movement's leader Beppe Grillo wrote on his blog.

The party was suspending Pizzarotti for failing to comply with its repeated requests over the past 24 hours to receive the legal documents notifying him he was under investigation, Grillo said.

"Given the total lack of transparency over a period of months and our inability to thoroughly and impartially assess the documentation in the case, and also to preserve the Five-Star movement's reputation, suspension is effected."

Pizzarotti confirmed on Thursday he was under investigation and denied wrongdoing, stating on Facebook that he felt "calm" about the probe.

"I am calm because it is a formality," wrote Pizzarotti, who was the first Five-Star politician to be elected mayor of a provincial capital.

Four Parma culture officials are also under investigation, La Gazzetta di Parma newspaper reported.

The probe against Pizzarotti came after another senior politician from the Five-Star movement, Filippo Nogarin, mayor of the Tuscan city Livorno, said on Saturday he was under investigation for fraudulent bankruptcy over the city garbage collection company.

Nogarin has also denied wrongdoing.

The probes are an embarrassment for the Five-Star movement, Italy's second-biggest party, which hopes to make major gains in local elections next month and has built its success on a squeaky clean image.

Pizzarotti was put under investigation after a politician from Italy's ruling centre-left Democratic Party complained that the person appointed head of Parma's Teatro Regio opera house last year had not taken part in the official selection process.
