Silvio Berlusconi has regained consciousness after open-heart surgery, his brother Paolo Berlusconi told reporters on Wednesday as entered Milan's San Raffaele hospital to visit the former premier.

"My brother is awake and is lucid. I've spoken to him and everything is fine," Paolo Berlusconi stated.

"He's suffering a bit of pain like anyone who's had an operation but he's showing his usual fighting spirit," he added.

Berlusconi's personal physician Alberto Zangrillo said Berlusconi had no complications after the four-hour operation on Tuesday to replace his aortic valve performed at San Raffaele by a team of top surgeons.

"Everything is fine and is going according to plan," Zangrillo stated.

The 79-year-old billionaire media tycoon spent the night under sedation in San Raffaele's intensive care unit, where the hospital said he is expected to remain through Wednesday.

Berlusconi will then undergo a month of rehabilitation at the hospital and his girlfriend Francesca Pascale told La Repubblica newspaper that "he has asked us to remain united" during his recovery.

Berlusconi founder and leader of the centre-right Forza Italia party, was admitted to the San Raffaele on 6 June suffering chest pains caused by the faulty aortic valve, a potentially fatal heart condition.

He had a pacemaker fitted in a hospital in the United States when he was 70 but has remained at the helm of his centre-right Forza Italia party, which is currently in opposition.
