Global warming and climate change are fuelling migration and radical Islamism in Africa, Italy's premier Paolo Gentiloni warned on Monday.
"Climate change has consequences also for migratory phenomena, Gentiloni told the 'Water and Climate' conference being held at Rome's Campidoglio town hall.
"Besides the influx of migrants to Italy and Europe, let us now forget that these major environmental dynamics produce first and foremost enormous internal migration flows, for example in Africa," he said.
Water scarcity in the Lake Chad Basin is even helping the Boko Haram Islamist insurgents make inroads in the region, Gentiloni said.
"The international community including Lake Chad must commit to help solve the water resources crisis in Chad," he underlined.
