Iran and its regional arch rival Saudi Arabia "should start talking to each other" and Russia is ready to aid the process, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday.
"They should start taking to each other and we are read to help in any way," Lavrov said at the Mediterranean Dialogues summit in Rome.
"It's a pity to have two very important and very influential countries symbolise the divisions between Sunnis and Shias - that is very dangerous," Lavrov stated.
Saudi Arabia's foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir and his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim al-Jafaari were also speakers at the summit, which is taking place through Saturday and being attended by 45 heads of state and government.
