Italy is "very worried and opposed to" an expected announcement by president Donald Trump that the US will become the first country to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, foreign minister Angelino Alfano said on Wednesday.

"We are very worried and oppose this," Alfano told Italian TV chat show Porta Porta.

"We were not involved in any decison-making process. We have said we are worried and we don't want to see a retreat from a two-state solution," said Alfano, referring to efforts to reach peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

"I hope that this evening Trump will reaffirm the goal of two states and the status of Jerusalem," he said.

Leaders from within the Muslim world and from the wider international community were swift to criticise Trump's expected decision, and warned of violence and bloodshed as a result.
