European Parliament president Antonio Tajani said on Friday he was certain that Italians would "freely choose" stability" when they they go to the polls on 4 March.
"I am convinced that Italians will freely choose" stability: their intelligence should never be underestimated," Tajani, who was in Brussels for an informal meeting of the European Council.
Tajani's comments came after European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker caused falls on the Milan stock exchange on Thursday after he warned of the risks of instability in Italy if the upcoming elections fail to produce an "operative" government.
Juncker later backtracked, writing on Twitter: "Whatever the result, I am hopeful we will have a government which will reassure us Italy will remain a central actor in Europe."
No single party or grouping is likely to win a majority of parliamentary seats in the 4 March vote according to opinion polls.
