Gentiloni renews appeal for Syrian ceasefire

Italy's premier Paolo Gentiloni urged a halt to bombardments in Syria as fighting continued Tuesday - the first day of a five-hour daily 'pause' ordered by the government's ally Russia.

"Games are being played at the expense of the Syrian people despite appeals by the United Nations and Europe, which I take this opportunity to renew," Gentiloni said at a military ceremony in Rome.

"Syria should not continue to be used as a military arena, ignoring the plight of a people that have been tormented for years by war," Gentiloni said.

His comments came as fighting continued in the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta area outside the Syrian capital Damascus during the first daily five-hour 'pause' ordered Russia.

Activists said there were government air and artillery strikes, while Russia said rebels shelled a 'humanitarian corridor' meant to let civilians leave Eastern Ghouta. Medics say over 500 people have been killed since the government intensified its bombardment nine days ago in a bid to retake the enclave.

The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution on Saturday demanding a monthlong cessation of hostilities throughout Syria but it did not specify a start date.

A day earlier, a strongly worded European Union statement called for an immediate ceasefire and access for aid trucks in Syria, calling the situation in Eastern Ghouta "horror".
