United States ambassador to Italy, Lewis Eisenberg was on Wednesday due to meet Matteo Salvini, secretary of the far-right League party - his first encounter with an Italian political leader since the 4 March national polls, daily Il Fatto Quotidiano reports.
"Ambassador Eisenberg welcomes the opportunity to hear from Italian political leaders about their plans for Italy’s future, and how Italy and America can continue to work together to keep our transatlantic bonds strong and our economies growing," the US embassy tweeted.
Also due to attend Wednesday's meeting at the US embassy in central Rome on Wednesday is the League's powerful deputy-secretary, Giancarlo Giorgetti, Il Fatto said.
That Salvini is the first leader of an Italian party to meet Eisenberg since the election daily owes simply to "the compatibility of their schedules," the daily quoted US embassy sources as saying.
But Giorgetti underlined the affinities between the League and populist US president Donald Trump, who counts Eisenberg among his personal friends.
"It is clear that there are profound similarities in our and Trump's political programmes - from the fight against illegal immigration to tax and above all relations with the European Union," Il Fatto cited Giorgetti as saying.
The League, leader of the centre-right alliance which won the biggest share of votes (37 percent ) in the national election, has claimed the right to try and form a coalition government and is also eyeing at least one of the parliamentary speakerships.
