European Union member states must present a united front during talks on the United Kingdom's exit from the bloc, Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi and his Luxembourg counterpart Jean Asselborn said after a meeting in Rome on Wednesday.

Ahead of a European Council meeting in October, Italy and Luxembourg - both EU founder members - agreed on the need to step up efforts to reach agreement on the terms of Brexit and on the EU's future relationship with the UK, the foreign ministry said in a statement after Moavero and Asselborn's talks.

"The main objective is to avoid a disorderly exit that would damage citizens and companies," the statement said.

"The UK will continue also in future to be an essential partner," it said.

The two ministers agreed that it was crucial to resolve outstanding issues, "first and foremost" that of the Northern Ireland border before the EU and the UK reached a comprehensive withdrawal agreement.

"From this perspective, Rome and Luxembourg reaffirmed their unwavering support for the work of the EU negotiating team and its chief, Michel Barnier, and agreed on the importance of maintaining united action by the 27 member states," said the statement.

The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March next year.
