Interior minister Matteo Salvini announced he was "happy" at the security decree issued Monday by the populist government, which strips convicted terrorists of Italian citizenship and tightens rules for refugees and asylum-seekers.
"I'm happy. It's a step forward towards making Italy a safer place," Salvini wrote on Facebook.
The decree removes humanitarian protection for migrants, introduces tougher rules for asylum applications and doubles to 60 days the length of time migrants can be held in deportation centres, among other measures.
The decree enters into immediate effect but must be voted into law by the Italian parliament within 60 days.
