Italy's populist government is not planning a withdrawal from the single European currency in the foreseeable future, far-right interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini said on Monday.
"The euro? Death is the only certainty, everything else is up for discussion. But it's not on our agenda today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow to reform or leave the euro," Salvini told Rtl radio 102.5.
"My children will grow up in a European context with the euro in their pocket," Savini said.
Salvini's comments came after European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker last week likened Italy to Greece and said that the governing coalition’s plans to hike Italy's deficit endangered the euro.
Juncker's comments unsettled markets and pushed up Rome’s cost of borrowing, prompting Salvini to threaten to sue Juncker.
