The international community cannot impose stability on conflict-wracked Libya and must avoid meddling in the country's internal affairs, Italy's populist premier Giuseppe Conte said on Tuesday.
"Solutions must not be imposed from outside," Conte told an international conference on Libya being held in Palermo to push a new United Nations peace plan that includes the reunification of the country's institutions and an election process starting next Spring.
"The international community's contribution must fully respect Libya's national sovereignty and avoid unwarranted interference," Conte said.
"It is down to the Libyan people to chose the timing and ways of taking the decisions that are fundamental to its future," he said.
A total of 38 delegations are understood to be taking part in the two-day international meeting on stabilising Libya which wraps up on Tuesday. Many of Libya's main political factions are believed to be attending as well as high-ranking officials from key nations and organisations including the African Union, European Union, Arab League, Word Bank and International Monetary Fund.
