Italy's president Sergio Mattarella held talks on Monday at the Quirnale Palace in Rome with Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas, Mattarella's office said in a statement.
Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi also attended Mattarella's meeting with Abbas, which was followed by lunch, said the statement.
Abbas earlier met Pope Francis and Vatican secretary of state Pietro Parolin and was later on Monday due to meet Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte.
Vatican recognised the Palestinian state in February 2013.
