On the 70th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Italy's populist premier Giuseppe Conte hailed the landmark document, saying it had always guided the populist government's policies.
The 10 December 1948 declaration "puts at its centre, people's dignity and freedom and opposes every form of discrimination and injustice," Conte said in a statement.
"It is a declaration that needs to be applied coherently when tackling today's global challenges and which we appreciate as an effective response to the horrors of all wars."
The declaration "has always inspired the actions of this government," Conte's statement added.
"For this reason we pay tribute to it as a key text for our legal culture and economic and social policy," the statement concluded.
