Italy does not intend to withdraw from the European Union or the eurozone, despite the populist government's assertive approach with Brussels, foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said on Friday.
"The Italian government has stated on several occasions, especially in meetings with European officials, that there is no plan to leave the EU or the single European currency," Moavero said.
''Even if the dialectic is now more heated, we are a government that remains firmly committed to the EU," he added.
"The positive thing is that as the debate has heated up, Brussels is now more interested in what is happening in other countries," he said in an apparent reference to Italy's recent tussle with the EU over its big-spending budget.
