Italy's cabinet 'to meet on Thursday'

The Italian cabinet is due to meet on Thursday at 17.30, according to government sources. Earlier on Wednesday, sources at the interior ministry denied the government could fall due to tensions between the grassroots Five-Star Movement and its coalition partner the far-right League party, whose anti-migrant leader, Matteo Salvini, is interior minister

An Italian Senate committee on Wednesday began deciding whether to authorise the lifting of parliamentary immunity for Salvini, who could face trial on charges including the kidnapping of nearly 200 migrants in August stuck aboard a rescue boat in a case that has split the Five-Star Movement.

A full Senate vote lifting Salvini's parliamentary immunity would pave the way for Salvini to stand trial One of the Five-Star Movement's founding principles is that politicians under investigation should be asked to resign but a vote against Salvini could destabilise the government. The vote on whether to proceed is expected in late February.

A special court in Sicily ruled this month that Salvini should face a trial over the case of 177 migrants trapped on the Italian coastguard ship Umberto Diciotti for two weeks because Salvini refused to allow them ashore until other countries and the Catholic church agreed to host them.

If convicted, Salvini could face a prison term of 3 to 15 years over his conduct.
