Hardine interior minister Matteo Salvini on Thursday hailed an accord between several European Union countries to take in the 47 migrants stranded in the Mediterranean for over a week, calling it a victory for Italy.

"Mission accomplished. Once again, thanks to the efforts of the Italian government and the determination of the interior ministry, Europe has been forced to face up to its responsibilities," Salvini said.

"Six countries have agreed to take the immigrants on board the Sea Watch 3, in coordination with the European Commission," he went on.

The countries are France, Portugal, Germany, Malta, Luxembourg and Romania, Salvini stated.

"In this case too, the goal was to find a solution that reconciles the safety of people at sea with that of a country - Italy - which is no longer willing to be a refuge for all of Europe's illegal immigrants," he said.

Salvini added that he hoped Italian prosecutors would open a probe into the German NGO, Sea Watch, whose Dutch-registered Sea Watch 3 rescued the 47 migrants off Libya on 19 January.

Sea Watch and one of the rescued migrants on Friday lodged an urgent complaint against Italy at The European Court of Human Rights over the case.

Migrants saved in the Mediterranean have repeatedly been trapped in similar standoffs between Italy and other European Union countries since Salvini took office in June and closed the country's ports to rescue ships.
