Former United Nations envoy to Syria Staffan De Mistura was on Tuesday awarded the Italian Institute for International Political Studies' annual prize for having enhanced Italy's image in the word.
At the award ceremony, Italy's Senate speaker Elisabetta Casellati, described the 72-year-old Di Mistura as "a key player in international missions that have seen him serve in high-level roles in all the global flashpoints."
"De Mistura's has undoubtedly been a life in the service of peace," Casellati said.
The veteran Swedish-Italian diplomat was UN envoy to Syria from 2014-2018 and was previously UN envoy to Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon.
