Members of the lower house of parliament's foreign affairs commission will on Wednesday question deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re on Italy's relations with Egypt and researcher Giulio Regeni's unsolved 2016 murder, the parliament said in a statement.

The hearing will be streamed live on the parliament's website, thee statement added.

Regeni, a 28-year-old Cambridge University doctoral student looking at the politically sensitive topic of independent trade unions in Egypt was abducted in Cairo on 25 January 2016, tortured to death and dumped by a highway, where his body was found nine days later.

More than three years on, no suspects have been arrested or brought to trial for Regeni's brutal murder.

Regeni's case caused a diplomatic rift between Italy and Egypt amid allegations that Egyptian authorities were failing to cooperate fully with Italian investigators.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and other top Egyptian officials vow they want to solve the case. Egypt's authorities deny Regeni died in custody but admit that security services were monitoring him.
